INTRODUCTION
Weyt-k/Hello, my name is Jackson Rosch, I am a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Education (elementary) program at Thompson Rivers University. I am a member of the Indigenous cohort living and learning on the traditional and unceded lands of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc within Secwépemc’ulucw. I am a proud Indigenous person aspiring to be a contributing member of the educational system. I have lived in Kamloops my whole life, although I spent a couple of years living in Surrey and Coquitlam. I hope to eventually move back down that way at some point and TTOC within the Chilliwack school district. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree where I studied History (major) and English (minor), which I received while attending TRU. When I was growing up I never wanted to be a teacher, I originally wanted to get into some type of justice or law system but realized it wasn’t for me. I have always had a passion for history and took great interest in it while in high school, as I still do.
HOBBIES
When I am not in school or working I like to spend my time outside, hanging out with friends/family, and playing video games (when I have time). During the winter I enjoy skiing, I go to Sunpeaks or Harper Mountain when I can. During the summer I like spending my time on the golf course, at the beach, r going camping, or hiking. While I am usually in school for most of the year I work full-time during the summer. When I can, I travel down to Fraser Valley and visit family and one of my best friends. I love movies, art, and streetwear. I tell myself if I wasn’t going into teaching I would want to be a game designer or developer, where I can put my interest to work and create things people love and enjoy.
WHY I WANT TO BE A TEACHER
Since I have developed a desire to teach, my understanding and love for teaching has grown. Before, I simply wanted to teach history and thought it would be as simple as that. However, since entering the program and learning the various teaching strategies and philosophies, I have built this greater goal to teach students and to be a contributing member of society. I believe it is important to equally be a teacher and learner simultaneously. I want to encourage students to build relationships, generate their own ideas (creative), and identify who they are and who are the members of their community. As a teacher, it is important to play a contributing role in building community and developing a shared sense of importance within it. I hope to not only be a teacher but also a role model and a mentor, someone that students can look up to and develop respect for.
The photo above was taken after my experience at my first practicum placement, the great people I am pictured with were all TMs at Kay Bingham teaching other classrooms. This was a great experience and introduction to teaching, I was surrounded by great people willing to learn and grow in the education field. Each of us was gifted a t-shirt for our time spent there by students, which reads “Teach Like a BOSS”, we all shared a great experience together and wish nothing but the best for these future teachers.
